The beast 'Rohini' at the holy conflux 'Konhara ' According to Hindu mythology , the elephants have been coming to Sonpur Mela since prehistoric periods, it is evident from the the legend of ," Gajendhra Moksha " which says deity lord Vishnu rescued an elephant king from the giant crocodile at the confluence of the holy Ganga and the Gandak ( Sonepur). The Haathi bazzar of Sonpur mela terraces it's history way back from the reign of great Mauryan emperor Chandragupta Maurya, who used to purchase the excellent breed of elephants and horses across the river Ganga to reinforce  his military contingent for warfare.So, since the inception , the Chattar Mela, the largest and oldest cattle fair of Asia has witnessed different and excellent breeds of elephants in its Haathi bazzar.It has been aptly said that the star attraction and charm of Sonpur mela is the Mighty Tuskers.

Sonpur Mela  is  the Asia’s largest and  the most famous cattle fair The Conflux of the Gandak and the Ganga   The Sonpur Mela possesses tremendous  religious  importance – on the day one , around 5,00,000 devotees take holy bathe at the Conflux . Sonpur Mela is held at the delta region formed because of conflux of the Ganga and the Gandak . During Mughal reign and before, the fair  used to be known as Harihar Kshetra Mela but  after the Britishers named it as Sonpur Pashu Mela, the people are used to it .
