Haathi bazzar: :An Important aspect of Attraction and Glory of Sonpur Mela.
The beast 'Rohini' at the holy conflux 'Konhara ' |
According to Hindu mythology , the elephants have been coming to Sonpur Mela since prehistoric periods, it is evident from the the legend of ," Gajendhra Moksha " which says deity lord Vishnu rescued an elephant king from the giant crocodile at the confluence of the holy Ganga and the Gandak ( Sonepur).
The Haathi bazzar of Sonpur mela terraces it's history way back from the reign of great Mauryan emperor Chandragupta Maurya, who used to purchase the excellent breed of elephants and horses across the river Ganga to reinforce his military contingent for warfare. So, since the inception , the Chattar Mela, the largest and oldest cattle fair of Asia has witnessed different and excellent breeds of elephants in its Haathi bazzar. It has been aptly said that the star attraction and charm of Sonpur mela is the Mighty Tuskers.
Earlier , the Haathi bazzar used to attract the traders from distant places as far as central Asia in North-West and Malabar in South.Numerous sports events used to be organized for the tuskers including race of various types, swimming. Though there are no proper records of the number of Jumbo's in earlier times but even in late 1980's around 900-1000 jumbos used to come here from different district of Bihar and other neighbouring state like Bengal , Jharkhand, Uttar pradesh and Assam. But in the last decade , there is a sharp decline in the number of Jumbo's at Haathi baazar, even much less than a hundred. In present year the number of Jumbo's reduced to a single digit number which is a warning bell for both Haathi bazaar authorities and lovers. Earlier the Haathi baazar was stretched over a kilometer but now it has been shrinked to a few yards only. The reasons are poor adminstrative support from the concerned district authorities, prohibition in trade of elephants at Sonepur mela since 2004 due to strict implementation of wild life protection act 1972 and further denial of transfer of ownership of elephants and many more.. .
Despite the fewer number of elephants , Haathi baazar is still the most popular attraction and charm of Sonepur mela, basically they are the symbol of Sonepur mela , without them the fair will loose it's age old tradition and charm.
So, it is a humble request to the concerned fair and district adminstrative authorities to take appropriate action and provide necessary facilities to elephants owners to preserve the great tradition, heritage and charm of this oldest and largest cattle fair.
